One Village One Product Movement has been initiated by Dr.Morihiko Hiramatsu, the Governor of Oita Prefecture, Japan since 1979. The movement was promoted through actual activities with a slogan "Let's work together on what we can do in the present condition". Three principles of OVOP are self-reliance and creativity, human resources development, and thinking locally but acting globally. Local people take the lead, independent of external prompting and largely on their own creativity and self-reliance, to make unique products from local resources for their own good and to capture markets external to their locality. All 58 municipalities in Oita prefecture have participated in OVOP and 766 different types of local products and services have been developed.
